Ten Reasons to choose WordPress

I thought up ten reasons why you should choose WordPress for your blog.

10. WordPress has millions of themes.
Your blog will undoubtedly have something great and unique to bring to the table, why not have a great theme to help you get a even more unique image. Best of all, you can get a theme from a collection hosted by WordPress. Even better, don’t like any themes you have seen or you see one but want to change a few things around? With a little coding knowledge you can edit your theme seamlessly in the WordPress Administration Control Panel(WP-ADMIN).

9. WordPress also has a large database of plugins.
Plugins are another great part of WordPress that give you more control over your blog. You can have plugins that help you post podcasts on WordPress, plugins that deal with AdSense, there are even plugins to add bulletin boards to your WordPress installation! Again, WordPress makes it easy for you to find plugins you might need with their WordPress Plugin Directory.

8. WordPress news is delivered straight to your Administration Panel.
With seven years in the real world equaling one online, it is always important to stay on top of things. WordPress makes this easy by posting select top bloggers posts into your administration panel. These include plugin and theme releases for the day as well as information about upgrades of WordPress.

7.WordPress is used the world over.
Wordpress is used quite often. People from professional base ball players to soccer moms blog everyday about their lives and they can do it easily thanks to WordPress. WordPress is not just for the technologically elite either. According to Weblogtoolscollection.com, 0.8% of the internet is run by WordPress, within a few years that number could be 2-2.5%.

6. Famous bloggers use WordPress.. Everyone from John Chow to I use WordPress. Being flexible is the only way to survive today in the business world. You have to be ready to focus your blogging on a specific issue in a short amount of time if you want to be productive.

5. WordPress is easy to install.
In some cases, you can have your WordPress installation ready to go in as little as five minutes. If you have a host that uses cPanel with Fantastico, your install process is a snap, and you can be blogging in mere seconds. Also, if you ever have any problems installing WordPress Support Forums are open 24/7.

4.You don’t need your own hosting!
It is true! WordPress is availible free from WordPress.com. You can post on your blog hosted for free as much as you like, however, it is only a free host. WordPress.com also has a stringent attitude at paid posting, something that can influence your monetization strategy and your writing style.

3.WordPress is simple to maintain.
Day to Day maintenance does not exist! The only thing you have to worry about is upgrading to the newest version, which you should always do. WordPress releases are usually not for minor fixes, but for important security fixes. Therefore, if you wish to keep your blog secure, you should upgrade as soon as possible when WordPress release a new release. The upgrading process is simple and takes even less time than installing your blog!

2. WordPress lets you be yourself.
Whether you want just a single blog or you want to start a blog network you can use WordPress to do it. WordPress has had WordPress MU(WordPress Multi User) availible for FREE for a great while, so you can start your own popular blog network with nothing more than a shared hosting account,a domain name, and an idea.

1. WORDPRESS IS FREE.
That’s right you can get one of the most versatile blogging platforms for FREE. Why on Earth would you not use something that could let you express yourself, let you earn some extra cash, and that is FREE. WordPress might have some problems with it, but the pros tremendously outweigh the cons!

I completely agree. WordPress is by far one of the best platforms and I use it on my own blog.

    Great list.

Thanks Money Moose, it is a great blogging platform.

I love wordpress too. BUT…. I have had a few ocassions where I have spent an hour or more writing a heartfelt post only to have it disappear when I post it. At first I get a window asking me if I am ‘sure I want to edit this post’, I click yes, and bingo….no post. When I has my free wordpress site (one that included ‘wordpress’ in the address) it never happened. It only started happening when I was using a different host.

This glitch has actually made me cry, and if anyone else knows what I am talking about they would know just how awful it feels to have all your thoughts and ideas vanish into thin air.

I am pro-wordpress for sure, except for that one problem.

  6. Anonymous says:

I know what your talking about, it has happened to me before too, just remember to hit that save button every paragraph and you’ll end up fine. I actually was writing this post at 3 A.M. last night, Yeah prolific thinking is great early in the morning.

one way to solve that problem is to use the Sun Micro’s Weblog Publisher. it’s a plug-in for Open Office (linux user here) and you can upload virtually any document to your blog, keeping the formatting intact. there is also the blogger plug-in for Word but i’ve never tried to use it on a WP blog. these these tools you can write in your familiar word processor and then upload it to your blog.

Also, in WordPress 2.3 there is a formatting button to clean up strange code in Word. :)

I am pro-wordpress for sure, except for that one problem.

Someone else suggested a Plug in for Open Office, there is also Windows Live Writer, Which has FINALLY came outta Beta… you can download it, by going here:

    http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/

Cool part is, it’s idiot proof… Believe, I’m as bad as they about breaking stuff.. and it works great for me. there’s full support on it. and it installs like a dream, and is easy as 1-2-3 to set-up…

  13. Binh Nguyen says:

WordPress could be the easiest blogging management system out there at the moment, that’s why I started blogging with WordPress at Binh dot Name. But I’m still having the idea of customizing Drupal for my full-featured website with blogging function.

  14. Anonymous says:

@Chuck Thanks! Then again it is made by Microsoft. I don’t like any desktop blogging solution, much easier to blog directly from the web. But for some it may be useful, thanks for the link.

@Bihn don’t try to gain links. ;) Drupal is an alright CMS I personally like Joomla much better.

Dude. Trust me. I used to be a part of the Anti-Microsoft Arm folding committee also. When I downloaded this, I expected total Scheiße. It is a good program. You try, You like, I Promise!
    :D

  17. Anonymous says:

I’ll stick to good old blogging. I wish you wouldn’t require registration on your site. :)

  18. Chuck Adkins says:

Well, I was, I turned the registration requirement off… But I’ve been keeping it quiet…. due to trolls and spambots… i do have a swear filter on… hopefully the trolls go away…
    :D

Why don’t you use a math equation or similar comment restriction? A Comment Limit could be coded somewhat easily. Thanks for the post as well.

  20. Chuck Adkins says:

    Honestly? I don’t code. :D

    I tinker and cut and paste a little… But I don’t code.

I’m a writer, not a techy geeky kinda guy, go look at my picture, if you don’t believe me. ;)

  21. Chuck Adkins says:

Thanks for the post as well.

No problem, it was very well written. :)

  22. Anonymous says:

Evidently, I was surprised to see Weblog Tools pick it up. Now it is in the WordPress Admin Panels of millions worldwide!

Oh, and their is a plugin for a math equation for comments. Such as where users have to figure out 2+2.

  23. Chuck Adkins says:

I think I may have seen it, I use Akismet and Spam Karma 2 for spam, so there’s no worries there… But I was having problems with people with a bad case of Knee Jerk Reaction syndrome to some of the stuff I write, and they were getting on here leaving nasty messages… (swearing, stupidity, ect….) mainly those from DailyKOS and Crooks and Liars.

I’m not a Republican, But I’m not a Liberal either and if you criticize either or you catch royal hades. :D

  26. Nathaniel says:

I used to be all about hard coding everything in notepad. In fact, I got some books on several programming languages, determined to sort all of that out and make it easy for me to update my site on a regular basis. Alas, it was a lot more difficult than I imagined. However, I managed to find wordpress at just the right time, uploaded the files to my server, was up in 5 minuets, a couple of hours of theme tweaking and I was officially up. It’s just so easy! I couldn’t imagine going back to hard coding all of that on my own. This is just way too easy, and the code it produces is very organized and fast. You just cant’ beat it.

  27. Marisa Duma says:

    Question.

Ten Reasons to Choose WordPress over what? Is there anything else out there?
We’re stuck with it, we might as well embrace its looooooovvveee.

  29. For me the plugins are the main reason to choose WordPress., but this isn’t limited to all the usable and available plugins.
If you just need something additional a plugin may be a very nice thing to your blog and may be relatively easy to write (compared to creating a complete website).

For me WordPress was just fine, but I needed something to add chess diagrams and replayable chess games.

Good post and very true about stuff disappearing occasionally. A good trick is to disconnect from the net and check your browser’s cache.

I’m trying Microsoft’s Windows Live Writer which is pretty good and solves that problem but I have very mixed feelings about using it which I’ve blogged about lately. Microsoft would like you to install a collection of other things at the same and you need to pay attention and say no.

I didn’t know about the plugin for Open Office. that’s good to know but what’s it called? Can someone publish a link here?

  32. Guy Cook says:

Very well said, and limited to only 10, #11 might well be the excellent group in IRC channel #wordpress that most often can help with issues related to wordpress. An excellent blog software

  34. Michael says:

Interesting that not one of the reasons has to do with content-production…

  35. Carson says:

I second the Windows Live Writer suggestion. It is head and shoulders above WP’s built-in editor. If you use Windows, and especially if you’re not a geek, you should at least give it a try. I’ve been programming computers since 1964 and I love it.

  36. This post rocks; I had a similar post today:
    http://genuinechris.com/2007/11/12/ten-things-ive-learned-about-wordpressday-45/

Didn’t get the traction that yours did–day late.

  37. Kurt says:

I think you mean 7 internet years is one year in real life…

  38. vangardx says:

I think wordpress is moving fwd and never look back again.. :D

  39. Not the best article I have to say. Most of the ‘reasons’ could actually apply to any of the big three (WordPress, Drupal, MT). Number 4 is nonsense – WordPress.com is not the same software as the WordPress install. If we’re going to talk about sorta-similar hosted services then the same could be said about MT – you don’t need to host that yourself if you get a Typepad account. Number 8 is actually a reason NOT to choose WordPress – unless of course you like having your dashboard full of Matt Mullenweg’s linkspam linkblog posts.

  40. mcangeli says:

wordpress is good. Even better is akismet for wordpress. Cut my spam down to nil.

As a blogging platform, its the best thing out there.

  41. Anonymous says:

    @Nathaniel, Heck Ya!
@Marisa Duma, There are other CMS and blog platofrms like Movable Type.
@50 chess lessons, Creating a chess plugin for wordpress sounds awesome, I
will have to take a look at it.
@Eats Wombats, an Open Office plugin is a sweet idea. Think this is it
    http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/ControllerServlet;jsessionid=035a99da212649498c08c557cd48d2a8?Action=DisplayPage&Locale=en_US&SiteID=sunstor&id=ProductDetailsPage&productID=50984800
@Michael, I only put 10 there are thousands of reasons to write about WordPress.
@Carson, WordPress online makes posting easy without a middle man, even if
Microsoft came out with a worthwhile product.
    @Kurt, woops fixing. :)
    @Vangardx, Heck ya man!
@David Russell, your entitled to your opinion but the majority likes it.
Maybe it is one of those cases of peer pressure, I see no issue with
“important” WordPress is VERY similar in both installations it is not
the same, but very similar. MT is an alright blogging system, but WordPress
is more widley used and much more adaptable in my opinion.

Thanks for all of your comments!

Some additional reasons to choose WordPress:

WordPress is much more than a blogging platform, it also makes a great website content management system – it is a great platform for building an easy to maintain website and much simpler to use than the big content management systems like Joomla or Drupal

WordPress is pretty well optimised for building search engine friendly websites
